Laura Willis Counselling

Person-centred counselling

I work in a person-centred way.

At its heart, this means that counselling isn't about me telling you what to do, giving you a set of answers or deciding what I think is wrong with you.

You are the expert on your own life.

My role is to provide a space where you can slow things down, talk openly and begin to understand your experiences from your own perspective. I'll listen carefully and without judgement, and we'll explore whatever feels important to you.

We start with where you are.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to talk about.

Perhaps you know that something isn't right, but you can't quite put your finger on what it is. Perhaps you're struggling with anxiety, relationships, a life change or a difficult period. Or maybe you've been coping for a long time and have reached a point where you don't feel able to keep doing things in the same way.

Whatever brings you to counselling, we can start there.

A space to feel, not just think.

Many of us become very good at thinking our way through difficult experiences. We analyse. We rationalise. We keep busy. We focus on what needs doing. We carry on.

Sometimes this helps us cope. But it can also mean that we become disconnected from what we're actually feeling.

Counselling can provide an opportunity to slow down and notice what is happening for you emotionally, as well as intellectually.

You don't have to force yourself to feel anything before you're ready. We can approach difficult feelings gently and at a pace that feels manageable for you.

There's no predetermined route.

Counselling doesn't have to follow a particular path.

We might explore something that is happening in your life right now. We might notice patterns in the way you relate to yourself or other people. We might talk about feelings that are difficult to access or make sense of.

And sometimes, if it feels relevant to you, we may explore experiences from earlier in your life and consider whether they have influenced the way you experience yourself or your relationships today.

But we don't have to go anywhere simply because we think we "should". I'll follow your experience rather than trying to fit you into a particular theory or solution.

The therapeutic relationship matters.

I believe that how we work together is just as important as what we talk about.

I aim to offer a relationship built on warmth, honesty, respect and acceptance. You won't be judged for what you think, feel or say.

At the same time, counselling is a professional relationship, with clear boundaries that help create a safe and consistent space for the work.

I'll be alongside you rather than directing you.

Session information and fees.

Sessions take place online via Zoom and last 50 minutes. The fee is £60 per session. You don't need to prepare anything beforehand; you can bring whatever feels most important to you, and we'll work together at a pace that feels manageable.

Concessionary rates may be available - please get in touch to ask about this.
